Some 3rd party operating systems (OS or shells) and games can cause an Illegal Instruction error message to display at the top of the screen. 3rd party software is not supported by Texas Instruments and Texas Instruments would advise against their use.
This issue may be corrected by reinstalling the original OS on the calculator using the TI OSDownloader which is installed with the current version of the TI Connect™ software . To do this please follow these instructions:
• Remove one AAA battery from the TI-89 or TI-89 Titanium.
• Press and hold the [Apps] key
• While holding that key reinsert the battery
• Press the [9] key
• Open the TI OSDownloader program. (This can be found in: Start Menu\Programs\TI Tools\TI Connect\TI OSDownloader)
• Run the TI OSDownloader program to reinstall the operating system on the unit.

When performing certain operations with the TI-89 family, TI-92 Plus, or Voyage™ 200 calculator, applications can be erased, freeing up archive (or flash) memory. Sometimes this happens unexpectedly. With a better understanding of how applications are stored on the calculator, undesired application deletion could be minimized.
When applications are being deleted or there is a progress bar either in the status line or in the middle of the screen at start up, the apps are being moved in memory. If this process is interrupted, for instance by power loss or by dropping the calculator, all of the applications that have not been successfully moved or re-installed can be lost.
The apps are stored in the calculator one after the other. This is very much like a stack of boxes. If a box in the middle of the stack needs to be removed, all of the boxes on top of that one must move also. The longer it takes to delete an application, the deeper in the stack of apps it was. Furthermore, the apps show up on the Var-Link screen in alphabetical order. This most likely is not the order that they are stored in on the calculator.
NOTE: When applications are being deleted from the calculator, do so with caution. Make sure the batteries are not weak. Do not pull the batteries out while there is a progress bar displayed.
The instructions will demonstrate how to remove an Calculator software application (App) from the TI-89, TI-89 Titanium, TI-92 Plus, and Voyage 200.
To delete Apps:
• Press [ON]
• Press [2nd]
• Press [VAR-LINK] (which is located above the minus key)
• Press [F7] (On the TI-89 or TI-89 Titanium, press [2nd][F7])
• Highlight the FLASH Application to be removed
• Press [<-] (This key is above the [T] on the TI-89 or TI-89 Titanium and to the right of the [=] on the TI-92 Plus and Voyage 200.)
• Press [ENTER] 19184
The following are possible causes for a graphing calculator's memory to clear:
* Resetting the unit.
* Running the self-test.
* Changing the AAA batteries when the back-up battery is dead.
* Anything that would cause a sudden loss of power while the calculator is on.
The APPS Desktop function of the TI-89 and TI-89 Titanium is switched off by default. Users expecting to see the familiar icons for their applications will instead see the default APPS menu.
To turn the APPS Desktop feature on:
• Press [MODE] and then [F3]
• Change the APPS Desktop setting from OFF to ON
• Press [ENTER] to confirm the selection, and then press [ENTER] to save changes.
